Is Peru Safe for a solo traveler?

Always use logic and caution anywhere you are traveling, and not be too flamboyant with money or high-price items like cellphones and cameras.

That being said, overall, we have never had issues with theft and find that the local population is extremely helpful and friendly.

Do I need to know Spanish?

You are coming to a Spanish speaking country, so knowing the language is definitely helpful. But because it is a highly tourist area, you can navigate without knowing the language. We have interpreters here if needed.

The retreat will be in English. If interpreters are needed, let us know and we are happy to accommodate if we can.

If you do want to learn, it's helpful to download an app like Duolingo or Google Translate. This can help you navigate the taxis/motos, the market and ordering at a restaurant with more ease.

Do I need vaccinations to come to Peru?

We don't recommend getting any vaccinations because we are at a higher elevation in the Sacred Valley, so mosquitos and other insects are not an issue like they are in the jungle.

Feel free to talk to your medical practitioner if you feel differently. Please do let us know if you plan to get vaccinations so we can discuss their contraindications (if any) with the medicine.

Can I drink the water in Peru?

We recommend always drinking bottled water, and using bottled or filtered water for brushing your teeth.

At the Center, we have filtered water, so please bring your water bottle for refilling.

Where do I fly into?

You'll fly into the Cusco airport. As a retreat guest, coordinate with us about pick-up from there.

Typically you will have a layover in the Lima or Bogotá airport. For the best deal on a flight, we recommend trying to book 2 months in advance if possible, and using a flight search engine like Kayak, Google Flights or AirFareWatchdog to find an inexpensive flight.

If you need more help with travel arrangements, feel free to contact us at ownyourowntruth@gmail.com.

Is there WIFI or internet?

Yes, we have WIFI at the retreat center available for your use.

There is also WIFI at many of the cafes in Pisac.

Will my phone work?

We recommend contacting your cellphone provider to figure out the best international travel plan for your phone. Many companies have a daily Travel Pass that you can pay a small additional fee to have full data and service while you are abroad.

Because we have WIFI, it's also possible to turn your cellphone data off and just use WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, Google Hangouts, email, etc.
